If Anyone Deserves a Beer It's You
Day 34: Cambria to Pismo Beach
I slept in and watched football as long as I possibly could. Had another tri-tip sandwich for lunch and got to catch part of the Raiders game with some other Raiders fans (something i'm not used to having grown up in San Diego). When I finally got on the road, the weather was nice and the ride was relatively flat compared to yesterday. The first half of the day I spent on Highway 1, then I rode through Morro Bay & Los Osos on quieter back roads. It wasn't very difficult, but today i'm extra tired and my butt is sore, so it was just one of those rides that just dragged on. There are days when you just zone out and next thing you know you just did 20 miles; And then there are the days that you constantly check your mileage and every time you look down you're only an inch further. Today was inch by inch.
At a confusing section just north of Pismo, I stopped to take a look at my directions and a truck pulled up and parked next to the sidewalk I was standing on. The guy introduced himself as DK and was just stopping to make sure I knew where I was going. Apparently he saw some cyclists a few weeks back riding on the 101 and wanted to make sure I don't make the same mistake. I let him know I was taking the frontage road and he gave me his approval. Of course we chatted for a little about where I was headed and where I came from. I let him know i'm meeting a friend in Pismo Beach for a beer and started this journey in Vancouver. Very nice guy and before he let me get back to it he says, "If anyone deserves a beer it's you young man!"
Finished off the last bit to Pismo and met up with my dude Freddy J for a couple beers and more football. Every time I have a conversation with this guy, it's always awesome and I walk away knowing something I didn't know before. Freddy and his wife Natalie threw out the invite for me to stay at their house when I was near, so of course I accepted. I spent the rest of the night hanging with them and their sweet baby Kenzie in their beautiful home in Santa Maria. A homemade dinner, good friends, a warm shower, and a cozy bed...what more could I ask for. One thing I have definitely taken away from this trip is that I have some pretty amazing friendships!
