Back At It

Day 29: San Francisco to Half Moon Bay
Today's Distance: 32 miles
Total Distance: 1,381 miles
Sabrina II, but from here on out known simply as Sabrina, and I begrudgingly got back on the road today.  Last night, I said my goodbyes and got all my stuff prepared for today.  It was difficult but I made it happen.  I was a little worried that my week off would reset all the progress i've gained over the last month, but I realized that riding a bike is just like riding a bike and I picked up right where I left off.  (You see what I did there?)  My first climb was up into Daly City.  It was no joke, but I did it without needing to stop and rest at all, which is encouraging.
Meet Sabrina II
After riding through Pacifica, it was the first time in a long time that i've been scared riding on the highway.  Maybe it was the break, but i'm also thinking that maybe it's just a sketchy part of the ride since the spot is known as Devil's Slide.  I honestly wasn't even convinced that I was even allowed on this part of the road.  It was the build-up to rush hour traffic and a winding, steep climb through wooded terrain.  It got darker, there were lots of fast cars whizzing by, and basically no shoulder because of all the pine needles and cones piled up on the actual shoulder.  After the climb you have to cross a bridge and then into a long tunnel.  The best way to describe it, is that it felt like I was going through the beginning of Space Mountain.  It was hard to tell that the tunnel actually was headed downhill, but I quickly realized when I looked down and I was at about 25mph without having to peddle.
Emerging from the tunnel, I was welcomed by a gorgeous view on the other side.  The ice plant is reddish-orange with a the ocean as it's backdrop; best thing I saw all day.  After stopping to enjoy the view, there was a heart-racing downhill with no shoulder and crappy road conditions.  I passed by a brussel sprouts farm and before I knew it I was at Half Moon Bay.  Sunset is at 5:09pm now!  Before heading in to set up camp, I spent about an hour at Starbucks charging my stuff.  The campsite at Half Moon Bay State Beach was only a couple miles away and once I got there it was almost completely dark out.  There are about 12 other cyclists here, which I think is the most i've seen at a hike/bike site yet.  I met a couple from Sweden while I set up my tent and then spent the rest of the night just chilling by myself.  The waves are crashing down and the weather isn't supposed to drop below 50 degrees tonight, so i'm thinking it's gonna be a good night of sleep.

Update: It's about 10pm now and as peaceful as this setting is, I can't sleep.  My stay in San Francisco is to blame for interrupting my sleep schedule.  Of course, right when I get comfortable, I have to pee.  This is the first night I can remember being able to see the stars and there were so many.  Maybe it was just me being sleepy, but I swear I saw multiple shooting stars.  Good night!
