1000 miles!

Day 22: Trinidad to Eureka
Today's Distance: 26 miles
Total Distance: 1,003 miles
I didn't mention that last night a bug flew into my eye because I didn't think it was a big deal at the time. It was getting dark  near the end of my ride, so I took off my sunglasses and then almost immediately it happened.  Right before I was about to go to sleep it started getting super irritated and I couldn't get it out until really early this morning. It actually ended up not being a bug, but a little piece of asphalt.  The combination of the lack of sleep and irritation made me feel like I was sick today.  Needless to say I did not feel like riding a bike anywhere today.

It was another gloomy day and I decided pretty early on in my ride that I would just stop in Eureka.  This way I wouldn't be pushing it too far but at the same time it wouldn't be a complete waste of a day.  About 7 miles in it started raining but not hard enough for me to stop and put on my jacket.  Soon I realized that even if it's raining only a little bit eventually you're going to be a lot wet.  One thing that hasn't changed on this trip is my stubbornness...but hey, I still got a long way to go, so never say never.

Nothing really notable as far as sights and landmarks. A lot of highway riding and eventually I did have to pull over and dig for my jacket.  In Arcata, I decided to take an alternate route off the 101 and ended up surrounded by cows.  I moo'd at them multiple times as I rode by but they didn't want to converse.  I thought happy cows came from California...

Eventually I made it to Eureka and surpassed the 1,000 mile...uh...milestone.  How crazy that I've been riding a bike for over 1,000 miles.  Or even more impressive, over 1,600 km!  Gave myself a quick pat on the back and then set my sights on the next thousand. Eureka is the biggest city I've been in since Vancouver with a population close to 28k.  They have some cool Victorian houses if you're into that kind of thing but for the most part I found the city to be a poophole.  Of their 28k people, my guess would be that 25k have a drug problem.  I'm exaggerating, but that's what it felt like.  The best thing about reaching Eureka is that I saw my first Target since leaving San Diego!  Kind of got unnecessarily excited over this, but if you know me personally, you know I frequent Target weekly.  Of course I went in and walked around and of course I bought more than I actually needed.  After my Target adventure, I decided to stay at a Motel 6 for the night with the hope that I can get some good sleep and won't be feeling sick tomorrow.  Wish me luck!
